The revolution with Blockchain lies in the fact that those who use the technology to share their health data can now own their data and even control its monetization. So how does Blockchain let individuals cut out "Trusted" Third Parties? How will such disintermediation transform the process of generating proof and real world evidence studies for life sciences? Will we have better, safer, more targeted drugs?

X Topic Abstract

For those less knowledgeable about blockchain, there are a few dangerous myths that keep getting circulated: 1) that blockchains are secure and "unhackable," and that blockchain transactions are anonymous. In reality, while data on ledgers may be immutable, there are still many ways someone can falsify transactions or carry out malicious attacks. Similarly, the most we can hope for today in most blockchain implementations is "pseudo-anonymity" that can quickly discover exactly who we are with very little effort. This session will discuss the current state of privacy, security, and identity on blockchains today, plus what we need to do moving forward to protect our data as blockchain-based decentralized applications become more commonplace. We'll look at some privacy protocols, ways identity can be decentralized and reused to avoid having to store sensitive data on-chain, and what security procedures need to be adapted to blockchain environments.

Speaker Profile

Christine Ferrusi Ross, founder of Decision Changers, is a market strategist and advisor working on complex issues of identity, blockchain, and security. She focuses on understanding changing market dynamics and trends, advising companies on how to change their strategies and operations to address the implications of those changes. Christine has spoken many times on blockchain-based identity, particularly how it affects security and privacy. She also works on helping companies understand how business processes that use identity data need to be adapted to work in an environment of new technological possibilities and evolving global privacy regulations. Christine has a background in market research, risk management, sourcing, and supply chain. She spent much of her career as a research analyst studying emerging markets and technologies. She has been widely quoted in business and IT press on these topics.

Day 2 : Blockchain Technology (September 18, 2018)
X Topic Abstract

As Block Chain personnel, we tend to get boxed-in, stranded on our own little island. We fail to make people aware of our activities, both within our own organization and in our wider professional circles. Just like a shipwrecked captain waiting for the rescue boat on a desert island, if you fail to communicate, your career will be stuck with no possibility of progression. This highly interactive and fun presentation will show you how to leverage networking and self-marketing techniques that will allow you to set sail off the island and into new opportunities and success.

X Topic Abstract

Blockchain's have many characteristics that make them potentially useful for supply chain applications. However, using blockchain for data storage and execution can be thousands of time slower and more expensive than traditional computing resources. Furthermore, there are decades and hundreds of millions of person-hours invested in developing and refining existing supply chain systems and applications. The vast majority of blockchain applications for supply chain will thereby be comprised of a combination of blockchain integrated with other technologies, such as supply chain optimization and execution applications, network analytics, traditional databases, workflow, global trade services, and so forth.

In particular, Network SaaS platforms can achieve many of the same benefits as blockchains. A natural question is which functionality belongs in a Network SaaS platform and which belongs in the blockchain. We will explore the intersection of these two technologies, and how blockchain is/should be integrated with other supply chain technology. In this talk you will hear about:

• Network SaaS Architecture—What is a Network SaaS architecture, how does it differ from an Enterprise SaaS architecture, and what kinds of functionality does it bring?
• Network SaaS platforms—Existing examples of Networked SaaS platforms for logistics, procurement, supply chain, and finance.
• Blockchain + X—What existing supply chain technology is being combined with blockchain to create supply chain applications?
• On-chain vs. Off-chain—How are decisions being made about which functionality and data belongs on the blockchain vs. off the blockchain?

We will look at specific use cases, such as produce freshness management, anti-counterfeiting, and supply chain optimization, as examples to see how this applies in real-world applications.

X Topic Abstract

Blockchain technology will have a profound impact on the developing world in these four areas: asset transfer (via cryptographic currencies), land title registration, digital identity, and anti-corruption. Through these applications emerging economies will begin to raise their standard of living and provide developed world institutions with a dramatically expanded customer base. A win/win.

Speaker Profile

In 2013, I was exposed to blockchain technology for the first time through my analysis of cryptographic currencies for a major asset management firm. From 2015-2016, I led an initiative within Latin America introducing identity verification methods utilizing blockchain technology. In April 2017, after 19 years of full-time employment within the “traditional” financial services community, I decided to dedicate all of my time to the application of blockchain technology in the nonprofit community that maintained operations in the developing world. I genuinely believe that this technology will have a profound impact on the economies of low and middle-income nations, eventually closing the global wealth gap.

X Topic Abstract

Bitcoin showed us how to exchange something of value in a peer-to-peer environment but without underlying monetary policies it is too volatile for mass-adoption. Stablecoins have monetary policies that provide necessary stability to markets, but are not of interest to investors. What are the characteristics that would make a Digital Currency ideal for a long-term store of value? How could those monetary policies be implemented?

X Topic Abstract

Picture a world in which any bank, regardless of size or location, can reach to the rest world and provide its financial products. Blockchain is the platform that would allow banks to operate with trust, efficiency, transparency, and global availability. Instead of competing against the banks, Blockchain technology could help improve bank operations, provide new products and services.

Speaker Profile

In trying to understand banking and global payment, I stumbled upon two concepts: Blockchain Technology and Regulatory compliance. Both concepts were new to me and very foreign to my area of expertise and line of work. I became passionate about those subjects, and at some point I realized that combining them could help lower barriers to cross border payment and reverse the current de-risking trends. That what our project team set out to bring to the global payment ecosystem.
